I was sitting in my vehicle, talking on the phone with my sister about my plans to start a business. I was recently divorced, bankrupt, and foreclosed upon, and things weren’t going well with my job. As I was talking, I didn’t truly believe what I was saying to her. I had an inordinate amount of doubt that was feeding my inertia. I slogged over my plans for the next couple of weeks and was hesitant to take the first step. As fate would have it, I wouldn’t have to; I was fired from my job and was forced to. Just when I thought things couldn’t get worse, I received a court summons for nonpayment of child support and threats from my landlord for not paying rent. Facing jail time and eviction, it appeared to me that I was going to receive my mail downtown for the foreseeable future. Upon throwing my hands in the air, I thought, “Why was this happening”? I followed the rules. I stayed on the right path.
During this turbulent time, I was not concerned about the mountain that lay ahead because I was too busy climbing out of the hole that I’d dug for myself. It was in this moment, the most difficult of times, that I was able to untie my shoe, take it off, and remove the pebble from inside. Only then could I take the first step.
As I’ve grown, I’ve learned to be unashamed in taking an approach toward life that is unorthodox and self-focused.
Ironically, by being self-focused you may find that it allows you to focus on reaching out to others. I know this to be true because I’ve lived it. I want to share, I want to encourage, I want to help others summit their mountain so they too can see the path they took and feel the exhilaration of real accomplishment.
